Go for your GiGa Dream!

Dare to dream big! No even bigger. You could compare the GiGa dream with the BHAG – Big Hairy Audacious Goal (invented by James Collins and Jerry Porras – authors of the book ‘Built to last: successful habits of visionary companies’). It’s a dream that’s clear and attractive; it helps you to focus on the long term (10 to 30 years) and is a catalyst for team-building. Make sure that your GiGa dream also has a clear end to make sure that you know when the dream is reached.

A nice example of a GiGa dream is the famous speech of President Kennedy that he gave on September 12, 1962 ‘I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth.’

Instead of coming up with realistic dreams, imagine your biggest dream. A GiGa dream will also work as a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you strive for your dream, you will look for people, means and ways to achieve that goal. If you limit yourself already to go for a small, achievable goal, then you won’t meet the people who can help you with the hidden dream.

Four years ago my dream was to become an international keynote speaker. I live in Belgium so I could limit myself to give presentations in the Netherlands, Germany and France but I formulated my GiGa Dream as follows: I want to give presentations for thousands of people all over the world. This dream stimulated me to look for business opportunities at the other side of the world: Australia and New Zealand. So I had the guts to book a trip to those countries – without knowing people in those countries and started to build up a network. On my first trips, I gave free speeches for small networking groups but slowly the groups became bigger. And since I formulated my dream, I’ve been to Australia and New Zealand 5 times and the groups and assignments are growing. I haven’t reached my goal yet but had already a chance to be a keynote speaker at a market-research event with 400 participants. So I’m working on it.

What’s your GiGa dream? Imagine that money, time and support aren’t a problem. What would be the biggest dream that you would love to achieve? Suspend your judgement and write down some ideas in the next 5 minutes.

And this guy also understood the concept of a GiGa dream:
